Reading is a gateway to knowledge, learning, and education and knowledge is power. But still, a lot of us are unable to access this wonderful resource because we think that books are expensive (take textbooks, for example). Even bookstores like Barnes and Noble are expensive, and though it is important to support these types of stores, as well as other independent bookstores, these are not always the most cost efficient. Here are some options to get books in a low-cost, and sometimes even free, way.

1. The Library

The library is an often overlooked source of getting access to not only physical books, but also audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, etc. While it may be hard to find newer books when you just walk-in, it is always possible to put holds on the books that you want to read and waiting until they are available. Libraries also have other resources including wifi, computers, and printers which are useful if you do not have easy or reliable access to these in your daily life.

2. eBooks

eBooks are a great way to access books if you are on the go or simply don't have enough room to house collection of physical copies of books. Plus, it's a much more inexpensive alternative to buying physical copies.

3. eBook Library

If you want to read a book online, or you can't physically go to the library, then it is possible to access your library card, or to even create an eLibrary account where you can check out ebooks by either getting loans or holds on them.

4. Library Booksales

Library booksales are something that many people may not be aware of, but if you check your local library, it may be possible to find some dates that these booksales are taking place. Often time, you can find a lot of cool older books, unique reads, and bestsellers. These books are usually much cheaper than used bookstores, as you can find books for $1.00 and under!

5. Used Bookstores

Used bookstores are a great alternative to buying books brand new, as a lot of the times, these books have only been read once, twice, or not at all, and you can get them for half the price or less than retail. Plus, they are often small independent businesses, who you can support as well!

6. Thrift Stores

Thrift stores are an amazing way to find used books for great prices, and you can also be supporting some awesome non-profit organizations at the same time. Plus, you never know what cool old, out of print, or rare gem you might find!

7. Borrow From a Friend

What's better than being able to bond over a common interest? If you borrow books from friends and family, then you can not only get a cool book to read for free (don't forget to return it), but you can also discuss your ideas with someone that you're close to.

8. Public Domain

There are a lot of classics (Shakespeare, Austen, Dickens, etc.) that are available on the public domain. Organizations like the Gutenberg Project work to provide easy to access online versions of these texts to brush up your classics knowledge.
